Influencer-turned-businesswoman Tiffany Catley is strangled at Scholar's Fountain after leaving a retirement party. A blackmail photograph showing her taking cocaine drew her back into central Cambridge after midnight. Four people leave soon after her and can reach the fountain, but cameras cover the surrounding streets. Carter initially believes the footage will make John unnecessary: the killer must appear somewhere on the recorded routes.
John has come to the station for another reason. Lucy's forthcoming interview with Joanne Kemper requires information about Kemper's previous contact with James, and John wants access to a restricted 2014 file. Carter catches him at the computer and makes a bargain: John can consult unofficially on Tiffany's murder if he explains what he was seeking. John maps the streets as a maze, marking every camera, entrance and route between each suspect's home and the fountain.
The decisive insight is that absence can identify the culprit. Police officers walk the possible paths while the team compares their progress with the CCTV feeds. Zack Woodson, Leo Brantley and Coco Aarons can each be cleared when a corresponding test route appears at the expected camera. Jennifer Wicks is the only suspect for whom no innocent path works. She also took the blackmail photograph on her phone, giving her a direct connection to the message that lured Tiffany out. John identifies Jennifer as the killer.
The cameras seemed to promise a positive image of the murderer, but the solution comes from proving which person cannot be represented by a safe route. Jennifer's claim that she never entered the maze collapses against the combined coverage and timing. Carter's team supplies the controlled walks and records; John supplies the inversion that makes missing footage evidential. The public courtyard, rather than offering limitless escape, becomes a finite network.
Lucy and Henry meanwhile find Dominic Kennedy, who died at a 2004 student gathering associated with Ryan Oakley and Joanne Kemper. Carter gives John the 2014 file he wanted: James closed Ryan Oakley's death as suicide. The dates align with Sinclair in 2024, and Carter reveals that his own late fiancée Mandy is part of the wider history. He agrees to compare notes with John rather than remain excluded. Kemper already knows about Lucy's planned interview, so the family concludes that cancelling might be more dangerous than proceeding. James's old case is no longer merely a private notebook clue; it is a shared investigation inside Carter's team.
Tiffany's move from online celebrity to business owner creates a circle of former collaborators who can resent, profit from or blackmail her. The cocaine image looks like scandal-management evidence, but John asks how it was made and delivered. Jennifer's possession of the original photograph gives the anonymous message a human source. The route exercise then prevents motive from doing all the work: officers physically travel the streets so each innocent explanation has an observable signature. When Jennifer alone cannot be matched to one, the map and phone point in the same direction. The fountain is surrounded by cameras, yet the episode avoids a magical enhancement of one image; the proof lies in the combined negative space of many ordinary recordings.
