Who is Lucy Betts-Taylor?
Lucy Betts-Taylor is James Taylor’s wife, Henry’s mother and John’s sister-in-law. She begins the series outside the police service, but she is the person who recognises that James’s disappearance needs an unofficial investigation. Lucy plans John’s initial entry into the station, manages the practical risks of his impersonation and pursues witnesses the police trail has overlooked. Her methods are social and improvisational where John’s are abstract: she persuades, questions, takes photographs and reads fear quickly. Within the family she protects Henry while refusing to accept that James left voluntarily without a reason.

Lucy brings John from his solitary life into Cambridge in Series 1 Episode 1. Her original plan is narrow—use the twins’ resemblance to retrieve James’s notebook—but the office murder keeps John inside the role. Lucy becomes his off-site guide to James’s relationships and manner, while also beginning to decipher the notebook. She understands before John that solving weekly cases can preserve their access to the larger one.
In Episode 2, Lucy helps recover Sinclair’s name from the impression beneath a torn notebook page. She then follows the consequences rather than waiting for John’s police access to produce answers. Episode 3 takes her to Rhys Bowen’s mother, whose account undermines the official story that the burglar killed Sinclair. Bowen’s death in custody makes Lucy’s enquiries more urgent and more dangerous.
Henry’s technical help leads Lucy to Matt Neville in Wales during Episode 5. She discovers that James’s former colleague is alive and hiding with his family, but his terror prevents an easy reunion or statement. Holly then summons Lucy to a late-night meeting. In Episode 6, Lucy finds Holly dying, picks up a knife and is arrested. John’s reconstruction proves Adam Newsum switched the weapons and used Lucy’s arrival to frame her.
Series 2 gives Lucy a more public investigative cover. In Series 2 Episode 1, she talks her way into a role at Gareth Fisher’s local newspaper, trading John’s puzzles and usable stories for press credentials. She also questions Adam in prison about Holly’s computers. The newspaper position is comic but functional: it lets her request interviews and search archives without pretending to be a police officer.
With Henry, Lucy identifies Dominic Kennedy’s 2004 death and its links to Ryan Oakley and Joanne Kemper in Episode 3. During Episode 4, she visits Helena Moss before interviewing Kemper. James’s telephone warning reaches John, but Lucy continues and uses the coded phrase John supplies to unsettle the MP. Her decision is brave and risky; the programme does not pretend that confidence removes the danger.
In Episode 5, Lucy brings Neville to Gareth’s office and helps secure James’s encrypted drive. Its message links Mandy Ziegler to evidence about her father. Episode 6 places Lucy beside John and Carter as Ziegler’s suicide is reconstructed. She ends the series as a full member of the alliance formed at the newspaper, no longer merely supporting an investigation conducted elsewhere.

Relationships
Lucy and John work because each supplies what the other lacks: she creates access and tests people, while he formalises patterns. Their closeness grows without erasing her loyalty to James or the strain caused by his secrecy. Henry is her investigative partner as well as the child she is trying to protect; she listens to his discoveries but sometimes allows him closer to danger than either intended. Carter becomes an ally once Mandy’s history enters the case. Gareth provides institutional cover of a scruffier kind, and Kemper becomes the public figure Lucy is prepared to question face to face.
