Who Is John Taylor in Ludwig?
John Taylor is played by David Mitchell in Ludwig. He is the reclusive puzzle setter who takes his missing twin James’s place at Cambridge police headquarters.
A solitary puzzle setter who enters his missing twin’s professional life and gradually turns impersonation into an investigation.
Who is John Taylor?
John Taylor is a professional puzzle setter who publishes under the name Ludwig. He is James Taylor’s identical twin, Lucy’s brother-in-law and Henry’s uncle. At the beginning of the programme he lives alone, dislikes disruption and has no police training. Lucy brings him to Cambridge because his resemblance to James offers a way into the missing detective’s office. John’s talent is not forensic authority but structured reasoning: he turns movements, timings and witness choices into the kind of constrained problem he understands. That ability makes him useful to DI Russell Carter’s Major Investigations Team even when his social unease makes ordinary police work difficult.

In Series 1 Episode 1, Lucy persuades John to enter the station as James and retrieve a coded notebook. Carter instead takes him to an office murder. John identifies Sarah Gilmarsh by connecting the fire-door distraction, forged signature, delaying telephone call and stairwell route. The success traps him inside the impersonation: the team thinks James has changed, while John discovers that puzzle logic can solve a real crime.
The next cases broaden that unexpected role. At Bryce Manor in Episode 2, he notices the cleaned urn and altered wall hiding Peter Williams’s body. Episode 3 turns a Cambridge tour into a route-and-photograph problem, and Episode 4 lets him map Gary Jennings’s manipulated building-site rota. These investigations build Carter’s confidence in “James” while making every contact with police records more dangerous.
The school case in Episode 5 is personally revealing. John returns to the environment he shared with James and meets Mr Todd, the teacher who first encouraged his interest in puzzles. A fresh apple core proves that Mr Bishop remained inside the locked study over the weekend. Mr Todd also recognises that John is not James, showing that close knowledge can penetrate the disguise even when colleagues do not.
Holly Pinder’s death changes John’s position in Episode 6. Lucy is arrested after finding Holly, so John admits the impersonation to Carter, Carol Shaw, Alice Finch and Simon Evans. He clears Lucy by reconstructing Adam Newsum’s knife switch, then learns that Holly sold police information to Roger Sinclair. Shaw does not excuse the deception, but John’s results lead to a legitimate consultant role rather than a return to anonymity.
Series 2 begins with John working openly under his own name. The theatre case in Series 2 Episode 1 asks him to separate Patricia Lowery’s protective confession from Portia’s guilt. In Episode 3, Carter catches him seeking James’s 2014 file; their bargain turns guarded cooperation into a shared investigation. James then telephones during Episode 4, warning John to stop Lucy’s Kemper interview without revealing his location.
By Series 2 Episode 6, John refuses the easy answer that Joanne Kemper shot Chief Constable Ziegler. He proves Ziegler killed himself and used a catapult mechanism to place Kemper’s stolen gun in the fireplace. Clearing a woman he suspects of other crimes shows the principle beneath his method: the solution must fit the evidence, not the outcome the investigators want. He ends the series inside a genuine alliance with Lucy, Henry, Carter, Ethan, Caitlin and Gareth Fisher.
