Mitchell carries Ludwig’s central double assignment: the reclusive puzzle setter John and his missing detective twin James. The premise depends on the audience reading minute differences in confidence, rhythm and social ease while still believing that the brothers could be mistaken for one another.
Before Ludwig, Mitchell was best known for comedy made with Robert Webb, including Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look, alongside Back and Upstart Crow. He is also a long-running team captain on Would I Lie to You?. On Ludwig he is additionally credited as an executive producer, joining performance and production responsibility on one record.
Spoiler-light · character and performance
John supplies the weekly investigations with lateral reasoning, but his impersonation also creates the continuing risk beneath them. James is often defined through absence, records and other characters’ memories. Keeping both men connected without making them interchangeable is the performance problem at the centre of the programme.
Mitchell’s established screen persona—verbal precision, discomfort with social performance and argumentative timing—fits John’s puzzle-led way of processing a room. Ludwig uses those familiar qualities dramatically: pauses and evasions can carry as much information as a solved clue.

In a 2024 Series 1 interview, Mitchell said he had grown up enjoying detective programmes including Miss Marple, Inspector Morse and Poirot. He was drawn to Mark Brotherhood’s premise because John is a fish out of water whose puzzle-setting skills help him work as a detective. Mitchell also valued the combination of a self-contained mystery in each episode with a longer-running story.
He described John’s retreat into puzzles as a response to his father’s disappearance, and said he had enjoyed returning to Cambridge for filming. He recalled growing up in Oxford and his own time at university in Cambridge. These are Mitchell’s interpretations and recollections about the role.
