An English presenter, author, producer and actor. He became known through The Ricky Gervais Show before presenting An Idiot Abroad and The Moaning of Life, and later co-writing and starring in Sick of It.

Karl Pilkington plays DI Matt Neville, an investigator from outside Carter’s immediate Cambridge team. Big Talk Studios included Pilkington in the programme’s guest cast, while the episode credits place Neville in Series 1 Episode 5 and Series 2 Episode 5. His clipped manner and readiness to challenge the established team make him a useful counterweight to John: Neville values ordinary police procedure, whereas John reaches answers by testing patterns and constraints.
Neville is not simply a comic interruption. He enters stories in which professional authority matters, and Pilkington plays the detective with enough restraint for the friction to sit inside the crime drama rather than outside it. The character page separates Neville’s fictional history from Pilkington’s wider career.
In Series 1 Episode 5 — Back to school, Neville arrives while John is investigating the death at his and James’s former school. Neville’s presence increases the pressure on John’s disguise because he represents another experienced investigator who has no reason to accept the changed behaviour of the man he believes is James. The school case also touches John’s own past, so Neville’s procedural confidence contrasts with the personal associations pulling at John.
Neville returns in Series 2 Episode 5 — The sushi-bar case, by which point John is working under his own name. That changes their dynamic: John no longer has to protect the impersonation, but he still has to prove that his puzzle-based route through a case can stand beside conventional policing. Neville’s reappearance links the two series and lets the programme revisit the question of what kind of investigator John has become.

Penguin Random House traces Pilkington’s broadcasting route from hospital radio to Piccadilly Radio in Manchester and then XFM in London. At XFM he produced The Ricky Gervais Show before becoming one of its on-air voices; the programme later continued as a podcast. His published books include Karlology and Happyslapped by a Jellyfish.
Sky’s programme records document three series of An Idiot Abroad and two of The Moaning of Life. He then moved into scripted comedy: Sky identifies Sick of It as a collaboration with Richard Yee, co-created by Pilkington, who also plays its central character. In a 2018 ITV interview, Pilkington described how much the new scripted project mattered to him; that first-person comment concerns Sick of It, not his later Ludwig role.
Pilkington’s move into fictional performance did not begin with Ludwig. He appeared as Dougie in Ricky Gervais’s Derek, using the same dry directness that audiences associated with his unscripted work but applying it to a defined ensemble character. Sick of It went further: Sky’s production announcement describes the series as co-created by Pilkington and Richard Yee, with Pilkington playing both Karl and the pessimistic inner voice that comments on his life. The doubled performance required him to sustain scenes as two versions of one consciousness, a useful point of comparison with Ludwig’s interest in identity and doubles even though the programmes are otherwise very different.
Penguin Random House’s author profile records a run of books growing from Pilkington’s radio and travel work, including Happyslapped by a Jellyfish, Karlology and the books connected to An Idiot Abroad and The Moaning of Life. Their appeal lies less in conventional autobiography than in the accumulation of observations, objections and lateral questions. That public voice explains why his casting as Neville attracts attention, but the performance should still be judged as acting: Neville has a rank, an investigative purpose and relationships determined by the drama rather than by Pilkington’s television persona.
