Profile overview

Lucy Betts-Taylor

Maxwell Martin plays Lucy, the person who brings John into James’s life at the police station and the character with the clearest view of what the deception costs. Lucy is not simply the keeper of the secret: her search for her husband gives the continuing mystery its urgency.

Career context

Work beyond Ludwig

Winner of two BAFTA Television Actress awards and the 2025 BAFTA Cymru Actress award, Maxwell Martin’s screen work includes Bleak House, Poppy Shakespeare, Motherland, Line of Duty and Until I Kill You. That range—from period drama and psychological intensity to tightly observed comedy—helps explain why Lucy can operate as both the programme’s emotional anchor and one of its quickest comic voices.

Inside the story

What the character changes

Lucy links the family story to the procedural one. She briefs John, tests what he has discovered and pursues evidence that cannot safely be examined through official police channels. Her knowledge of the substitution also means that ordinary conversations can become negotiations over how much to reveal.

Performance note

How the role works on screen

The role moves between domestic pressure, investigative momentum and dry comedy. Maxwell Martin’s performance keeps those modes in the same register, so Lucy can challenge John’s logic without becoming merely an expositional partner and can carry emotional stakes without slowing the case story.

Training and early work

From LAMDA to stage and television

In a BAFTA interview, Maxwell Martin spoke about her Yorkshire upbringing and early interest in acting. BAFTA records that she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Her early professional work included His Dark Materials at the National Theatre and Dumb Show at the Royal Court, alongside screen roles in Bleak House, White Girl and Poppy Shakespeare.

She said that after Bleak House she deliberately sought roles beyond costume drama. Her 2006 and 2009 Television Actress awards for Bleak House and Poppy Shakespeare are recorded separately from her 2025 BAFTA Cymru Actress win for Until I Kill You.

In her own words

Playing Lucy

In a Series 1 interview, Maxwell Martin described Lucy and John’s relationship as the heart of Ludwig. She sees Lucy as resilient and persistently positive despite her husband’s disappearance, and said the characters’ mutual care underpins their contrast in temperament. This is her interpretation of the role, not an account of later plot events.
