Profile overview

DI Russell Carter

Ola plays DI Russell Carter, John’s closest working relationship inside the Major Investigations Team. Carter initially reads the man beside him as James, which makes every exchange operate on two levels: the immediate murder inquiry and John’s attempt to survive scrutiny from an experienced colleague.

Career context

Work beyond Ludwig

Ola is a Nigerian-born, UK-raised actor, writer and director. His screen credits include Baghdad Central, We Hunt Together, Landscapers and Inside No. 9. Those projects span political thriller, crime drama and dark comedy, useful context for a Ludwig role that must remain credible inside a playful mystery format.

Inside the story

What the character changes

Carter gives the weekly cases their operational shape. He manages witnesses, evidence and team pressure while John pursues patterns that initially look eccentric. Their contrast is productive rather than simple opposition: Carter’s procedural judgement provides the real-world test for John’s deductions.

Performance note

How the role works on screen

Ola plays Carter with enough authority to make the impersonation dangerous and enough flexibility for the partnership to develop. His reactions often set the temperature of a scene—scepticism, impatience or recognition tell the audience whether John’s latest leap has clarified the case or created another problem.

Training and career

Drama school, screen and directing

The Oxford School of Drama lists Ola as a graduate of its Three Year Course. Its alumni profile identifies his parts as Baba in We Hunt Together, Douglas Hylton in Landscapers, Cal in McDonald & Dodds and Kellerman in Baghdad Central. In a 2021 interview he discussed the school’s training exercises and credited its connections as part of his route into professional work. The same interview identifies Baghdad Central as his on-screen debut, followed by Inside No. 9, We Hunt Together and his role as solicitor Douglas in Landscapers.

His professional agency separately describes A Long Way from Cairo as his first short film as writer-director and records festival screenings and a British Short Film Awards Best Director longlisting. The school calls the 2024 Best Director recognition a nomination, while the agency calls it a longlisting; neither source records a win. The school also records a 2022 Edinburgh TV Awards Breakthrough Talent nomination. These sources do not provide a dated complete filmography.
