Who is DI Russell Carter?

DI Russell Carter is the operational police officer most closely paired with John. In Series 1 he believes John is DCI James Taylor and treats him as a returning colleague whose behaviour has become unusually awkward. Carter manages scenes, interviews suspects and translates John’s abstract requests into work the team can carry out. He is not simply the sensible observer of Ludwig’s deductions: his judgement, loyalty and personal history become essential to the continuing case. The death of his fiancée Mandy Ziegler predates the main story and remains part of his life even before its connection to James’s investigation becomes clear.

Carter collects John for the office murder in Series 1 Episode 1, inadvertently extending Lucy’s brief impersonation plan. He expects the man he knows as James to lead, but adjusts when “James” begins solving the case through diagrams and movement constraints. Across the manor, tour, building-site and school investigations, Carter supplies lawful police process while John finds the structural contradiction.

The partnership develops under a false premise. Carter reads John’s unfamiliarity as eccentricity or personal change, and John uses Carter’s trust to reach James’s files. That makes the truth in Episode 6 a professional and personal breach. When John admits he is James’s twin so that Lucy can be cleared of Holly’s murder, Carter has to reassess every earlier scene. He is angry, but he also knows John’s reconstruction of Adam’s knife switch is sound.

Series 2 begins with Carter working beside John under honest terms. The consultant title clarifies their responsibilities: Carter controls the investigation and John advises. In Series 2 Episode 2, their reconstruction of the wedding party helps identify when Owen Doyle was wounded. The new arrangement is sometimes exasperating, yet neither man has to spend energy maintaining the James disguise.

Their deeper trust is negotiated in Episode 3. Carter catches John trying to access the 2014 Ryan Oakley file and offers an exchange: help with Tiffany Catley’s CCTV maze, then explain the secret search. After the case, Carter shares the page and agrees to compare notes. The discovery connects James’s work to Mandy, Carter’s late fiancée and Chief Constable Ziegler’s daughter.

Carter takes a serious professional risk in Episode 5 by meeting Matt Neville at the sushi restaurant. Carol removes him from the murder inquiry because his presence must be investigated, but the meeting produces James’s encrypted drive. When it reveals that Mandy was travelling to give James evidence about her father, Carter races to Ziegler’s home and discovers the chief constable’s body with John and Lucy.

Grief and suspicion pull Carter towards the apparent Kemper case in Episode 6. John nevertheless proves Ziegler staged his suicide to frame her. Carter accepts a conclusion that denies him an immediate villain for Mandy’s death, then joins the group committed to proving the real offences. His Series 2 arc turns a deceived colleague into a partner who chooses evidence over a comforting accusation.

Relationships

John and Carter move from unequal deception to tested friendship. Carter does not share John’s methods, but he learns when to let a strange reconstruction run and when to demand an accountable answer. Lucy becomes a co-investigator once the Kemper pattern includes Mandy, although Carter is wary of her risks. Carol Shaw is his senior officer and frequently the person who must protect the team from Ziegler or Radley. Alice and Simon are his Series 1 detectives; Ethan and Caitlin take those operational positions in Series 2. Mandy’s absence gives the conspiracy a personal cost that Carter cannot file away as another case.
