History and background

The place before the programme

Silver Street was once known as Small Bridges Street because the approach crossed more than one branch of the Cam. An iron bridge replaced the earlier timber crossing in 1841. The present bridge was erected in 1958–59 to a design prepared by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1932. The neighbouring mill waters preserve the geography of Cambridge’s former riverside mills.

How it appears on screen

The bridge, Silver Street and the Mill Pond form part of the location record for the Series 1 walking-tour case. Production reporting also places Series 2 filming in this area, but the Casebook does not assign those later shots to a particular episode until a complete frame check is recorded.

Plan a visit

Before visiting

Silver Street Bridge is a public road crossing over the Cam, with a view towards the Mill Pond and Queens’ College. The wider riverbank and punting areas are not all part of the same public route.

  • Where: Silver Street, Cambridge, beside the Queens’ College Silver Street entrance and Porters’ Lodge (CB3 9ET).
  • When and cost: The street crossing itself has no ticket or visitor opening hours. College entry and punting are separate, with their own charges and rules.
  • Travel: The University “U” bus stops on Silver Street outside the college and connects with Cambridge station. The college cautions that driving through central Cambridge is restricted.
  • Access and safety: The bridge carries traffic, cycles and many pedestrians. Keep moving at pinch points, and use the college’s access information if entering its grounds.
  • Facilities: Cambridge City Council lists the Silver Street toilets as open 08:30–19:30 Monday to Saturday and 10:00–18:00 Sunday, with a £1 charge per visit. The street-level accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities are separate from the basement toilets; a Radar-key visit to the street-level facilities is free. Check the live council listing before travelling.

Silver Street’s screen name

Varsity’s 8 December 2024 account notes that Silver Street became Mallard’s Way on screen and a Queens’ accommodation block represented a development. The fictional street name should not replace the real street name in a visitor route. Source.
