History and background

The place before the programme

Queens’ Lane runs through the historic college quarter between Silver Street and the area behind King’s College. Its enclosed turns, college walls and changing name along the route preserve the irregular grain of medieval Cambridge. It is a working street rather than a purpose-built visitor attraction.

How it appears on screen

The lane appears in Series 1 Episode 1 as John drives through Cambridge in his brother’s car. The red-brick edge of St Catharine’s College and the approach towards King’s Lane help identify the shot.

Plan a visit

Before visiting

Queens’ Lane is a public street, so you can see the exterior filming setting without a ticket. It is a working route, not a film set: keep to the public pavement and respect college gates, residents and deliveries.

  • Where: Queens’ Lane, central Cambridge, near Silver Street and the rear of King’s College. The reported driving shot is in Series 1 Episode 1; its precise position and scene details still need a frame check.
  • When and cost: The street has no ticketed opening hours or admission charge. College interiors are separate controlled spaces.
  • Getting there: Walk from central Cambridge. The University “U” bus stops on nearby Silver Street outside Queens’ College; the college says the station is a long walk and a bus or taxi may be easier.
  • Parking and driving: Do not drive through the Silver Street bus gate from Queen’s Road to reach this area: Queens’ College warns that only buses and taxis may pass. College parking is limited and by permit, not general visitor parking. For city-centre parking, check the council’s Grand Arcade car park, its current charges and Blue Badge arrangements before travel.
  • Facilities: The lane has no visitor facilities. The council lists public toilets at Silver Street Bridge, including a street-level accessible toilet and baby-changing provision. The ordinary toilets are down stairs and carry a charge; Radar-key use of the street-level facilities is free. Check current hours and availability on the council page.
  • Access: Pavements are narrow and traffic and cycles share the area. A step-free route has not been independently surveyed. Ask the local visitor service about a suitable route if needed; do not assume adjoining college entrances are open.
