History and background

The place before the programme

Queens’ College was founded in 1448 and occupies buildings on both sides of the River Cam. Its celebrated timber footbridge was designed by William Etheridge in 1748 and built by James Essex the Younger in 1749. It was repaired in 1866 and rebuilt to the same design in 1905. Contrary to the popular story, Isaac Newton did not design it.

How it appears on screen

Location records identify Queens’ College, the Mathematical Bridge and Silver Street in the production footprint of Series 1 Episode 3, the walking-tour case. The bridge also contributes to the programme’s broader visual shorthand for Cambridge. The site records this as a location match, not a claim that every angle around the bridge belongs to that episode.

Plan a visit

Before visiting

The Mathematical Bridge is inside a working college. The college currently offers self-guided visits, but its closure dates and visitor rules matter. You can also see the bridge from the public Silver Street crossing without entering the college.

  • Address: Queens’ College, Silver Street, Cambridge CB3 9ET. The college directs tourist visitors to the Visitors’ Gate on Queens’ Lane; use the Silver Street Porters’ Lodge if that gate is closed.
  • Opening and price: The college lists 10:00–16:00 and £5 per visitor, with listed exemptions and closure dates. Check the current college page before travelling; the 2026 closure list includes 29 September–6 October.
  • Travel: The University “U” bus serves Silver Street from Cambridge station. Motor-vehicle access through the central restricted area is limited; follow current college directions rather than assuming on-site parking.
  • Accessibility: Step-free entry is available via the Silver Street Porters’ Lodge. The college reports steep 1-in-5 ramps on both sides of the Mathematical Bridge; manual wheelchair users may need assistance. Contact the college about the route that works for you.
  • Facilities: The public toilets at Silver Street Bridge, opposite Queens’ College, are listed by Cambridge City Council as open 08:30–19:30 Monday–Saturday and 10:00–18:00 Sunday. There is a £1 charge per visit; the street-level accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities are free with a Radar key. Check the council’s current toilet listing before relying on these hours. The college’s own access guide lists accessible toilets on both sides of the river, but its tourist page does not confirm that they are available to general visitors.
  • Visitor rules: Stay on designated walkways and out of private rooms and staircases. Groups of six or more must follow the college’s guided-tour rules.
