History and background

The place before the programme

St John’s College was founded in 1511. Its covered “New Bridge” was designed by Henry Hutchinson in the Gothic Revival style and completed in 1831, linking Third Court with New Court across the Cam. The Bridge of Sighs name became associated with it after Queen Victoria admired the bridge during her 1847 visit.

Ludwig production file

How it appears on screen

St John’s and the Bridge of Sighs are repeatedly cited as part of Ludwig’s Cambridge location language. The available sources establish the place within the production footprint but do not yet justify assigning every appearance to a precise episode.

Responsible access

Before visiting

The Bridge of Sighs is inside a working college, not an unrestricted public crossing. Admission, the signed visitor route and temporary closures determine what you can see on a given day. A river view may also be possible from an authorised punting trip; this is separate from college admission.

  • Entrance and status: For ordinary tourism, use the Great Gate Porters’ Lodge on St John’s Street and follow the marked public route. The college can close to tourism at short notice, even during a published visitor period. Check its live notices on the day you travel.
  • Published 2026 opening and price: The college lists visitor access from 9.30am to 4.30pm during its published periods. From 6 July through 30 September 2026, ordinary tourist admission is charged: adults £17, children aged 12–16 £10, and students and visitors aged 66 or over £10. Some listed groups, including Cambridge residents with CB-postcode evidence, enter free. These are 2026 terms, not a promise of future hours or prices; payment is by bank card, not American Express, and the admission terms do not allow re-entry.
  • Booking and groups: The college does not state a general advance-booking requirement for individual tourists on its visitor page. Commercial groups of five or more must use an approved qualified guide and arrange this with the named tour provider. Check the official page for the terms applying to your party.
  • Rail, bus and parking: The college estimates a 30-minute walk from Cambridge railway station and roughly 10–15 minutes from Drummer Street or Emmanuel Street bus stops to the Great Gate. Bridge Street is served by some Park & Ride routes. The college says parking is not available to general visitors. Blue Badge holders may park in the Forecourt and Cripps car parks; confirm your route and any access needs with the porters before travel. Use the official directions and live transport information.
  • Accessibility and facilities: The college describes level entry from St John’s Street, but some courts and paths are uneven. Its Bridge of Sighs crossing is steep with uneven paving; Kitchen Bridge is flatter but gravelled. Accessible toilets are listed in several buildings, not all of which are open to the public. Confirm the visitor route and facilities for your needs with the porters on 01223 338600 or read the college accessibility guide before setting out.
  • Respect the college: Stay on the signed visitor route; staircases and other private areas are not tourist access. Organised photography, filming and recording require prior permission. Bicycles and dogs other than assistance dogs are not permitted on the visitor route. Follow the site-access rules.

Visitor information checked 20 September 2026. Opening, prices, closures and facilities can change. This guide does not imply a Ludwig tour or access to production-only areas.
