Who is Holly Pinder?
Holly Pinder is the technology specialist attached to Cambridge police headquarters in Series 1. She manages systems, access records and digital enquiries for the Major Investigations Team, placing her close to information that detectives assume is secure. Holly is quick to notice that the returning “James” behaves differently, and her technical position lets her see traces of John’s unauthorised searches. Spoiler-free viewers should understand her as a police colleague with an unusually ambiguous interest in James, not as a sworn detective or a member of the Taylor family. She does not appear as a living character in Series 2, but discoveries about her systems continue to affect the station.

Holly encounters John’s impersonation from inside the station in Series 1 Episode 1. The office murder is not connected to James’s disappearance, yet John’s need to reach police records makes Holly’s technical domain important immediately. Unlike field investigators, she can notice what accounts are used and what information somebody tries to retrieve.
As John follows Sinclair’s name, Holly’s ability to monitor access becomes more threatening. In Episode 4, John discovers that she has removed the trace of his unauthorised search. She has protected him from immediate exposure without being asked, which means she both understands that something is wrong and has created leverage over him. The favour cannot be read as simple loyalty because she withholds her purpose.
During Episode 5, Holly claims that James kissed her at a police Christmas party. John initially hears this as evidence that his twin may have had an affair. Holly also probes his behaviour closely enough to test whether he is the man she knew. At the end of the episode she telephones Lucy and requests an urgent meeting about James, bringing the private information game into the Taylor household.
Lucy arrives at Holly’s flat in Episode 6 and finds her fatally wounded. Adam Newsum, Holly’s partner in a private trade, has killed her after learning she withheld his share of their profits. When Lucy bends over Holly, Adam swaps the knives so that the arriving police see Lucy with the apparent murder weapon. John later reconstructs the exchange and clears her.
The investigation reveals that Holly used police access to obtain compromising information and sold or exploited it. Roger Sinclair was among the people who acquired material through her. His archive mixed extravagant theories with a genuine connection important enough to provoke murder and concealment. Holly’s suggestion of an affair with James is therefore not the final explanation for their contact; information, testing and potential blackmail better fit what the finale establishes.
Series 2 begins with the station dealing with the digital record Holly left behind. In Series 2 Episode 1, computers and stored data connected to her operation are isolated for review, placing parts of the building out of bounds. Lucy questions Adam in prison, while Carter has already visited him about the same material. Holly’s actions continue to shape who trusts the station and why James’s files cannot be treated as ordinary archived evidence.
Later Series 2 episodes follow the Sinclair, Kemper and Ziegler chain rather than giving Holly a new personal storyline. Her lasting importance is structural: she demonstrated that police information could move through a private market, and her murder forced John to reveal his identity. The alliance formed in Episode 6 is more cautious about official channels partly because Holly’s case showed how those channels had been observed and exploited.

Relationships
John initially sees Holly as a colleague who might expose the impersonation, then as somebody whose unexplained intervention demands an answer. Lucy is drawn into Holly’s claims about James, while James’s connection to Holly centres on the Sinclair material; the programme does not establish a romantic relationship as fact. Carter, Alice, Simon and Carol rely on the integrity of the station systems Holly administers.
