Who is DCS Carol Shaw?
Detective Chief Superintendent Carol Shaw is the senior officer overseeing Cambridge’s Major Investigations Team. She is James Taylor’s boss before his disappearance and therefore one of the people John must deceive in Series 1. Carol values results, chain of command and the reputation of the unit. Her controlled manner can make her appear hostile to John, but her decisions repeatedly show that she is weighing institutional risk against the evidence in front of her. She is also the officer best placed to see how pressure from Chief Constable Ziegler and DCC Clint Radley affects what her detectives are allowed to investigate.
Show their full story (spoilers)
Carol meets John as “James” after the impersonation has already expanded into murder work in Series 1 Episode 1. She expects the DCI she appointed to perform his role and notices changes in his manner, but the office case closes successfully. As John continues solving murders, strong results compete with the odd behaviour that might otherwise provoke a closer identity check.
During the building-site inquiry in Episode 4, Holly Pinder’s control of access logs becomes relevant to Carol’s station even though Carol does not yet know the full deception. Episode 5 shows her pressing for a solution to the headmaster case while Holly’s knowledge of John grows more dangerous. Carol’s focus remains operational because the private James search has been concealed from her.
The concealment ends in Episode 6. Lucy has been arrested for Holly’s murder, and John admits he is not James. Carol must confront unauthorised access, false representation and the uncomfortable fact that an untrained civilian has produced valuable solutions inside her unit. Once John clears Lucy and exposes Adam Newsum, Carol creates a controlled alternative: John may contribute as a consultant under his own name.
Series 2 places Carol between that unconventional arrangement and pressure from above. In Series 2 Episode 1, she warns Carter not to leave John alone with Ziegler. The caution reflects more than dislike; Ziegler is connected to James’s first case, Joanne Kemper and the review of the station after Holly’s information operation. Carol cannot openly accuse the chief constable, but she can limit his access to John.
Her authority is tested in Episode 5. Carter is present at Jonathan McQuade’s poisoning because he is secretly meeting Matt Neville, so Carol removes him and leads the restaurant inquiry herself. That decision protects the integrity of the murder case even though Carter’s other purpose matters. She continues using John’s analysis while refusing to ignore the conflict around his colleague.
After Ziegler’s death in Episode 6, Carol’s team investigates evidence pointing towards Kemper. John proves Ziegler framed the MP, but Radley’s intervention closes down the wider official route. Carol joins the newspaper-office alliance with the detectives and the Taylor family. Her movement is significant: she begins as the guardian of the institution and ends prepared to scrutinise senior power when formal structures obstruct rather than protect the truth.

Relationships
Carol’s relationship with John is founded on boundaries rather than easy affection. She recognises his usefulness, formalises his role and expects him to work within police responsibility. With Carter she combines trust and supervision, backing him while still removing him from a case when his secret meeting creates a conflict. Alice, Simon, Ethan and Caitlin work beneath her command in their respective series. Lucy remains a civilian whose information can help but whose tactics Carol cannot control. Ziegler and Radley represent senior authority above her, making her choices about resistance central to the programme’s institutional story.
