A Scottish stage and screen actor whose work includes Boiling Point, Big Boys, The Responder and Mary Queen of Scots. She won BAFTA Scotland’s 2022 film acting award for Boiling Point.

Big Talk Studios’ cast announcement names Hoyle as DS Alice Finch; the Series 1 cast register lists six episodes. Her agency CV uses a different name for the Ludwig role; that conflict is noted in the source record below. Plot interpretation remains in the character and episode records.
Core police team · Series 1
Hoyle plays DS Alice Finch, a recurring detective whose practical casework helps make the Major Investigations Team feel like a functioning unit rather than a backdrop for John. Finch contributes to interviews, evidence gathering and the internal rhythm of each inquiry.
Hoyle trained in musical theatre at Arts Educational Schools from 2014 to 2017 on an Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation scholarship, according to her agency CV. Her stage credits include the original London cast of Six, Sylvia at the Old Vic and Malory Towers. Her screen record spans Mary Queen of Scots, the film and television versions of Boiling Point, Big Boys, The Responder and The Outrun.
She won BAFTA Scotland’s 2022 Actress – Film award for Boiling Point. In a 2025 Screen International interview, Hoyle described singing as part of how she works through a performance and discussed the role of accents in her screen work. That is her account of her craft, not a claim about her preparation for Ludwig.
Spoiler-light · character and performance
Finch sits between Carter’s leadership and the constables’ investigative work. That position makes her a useful reader of both the evidence and the people handling it. Her exchanges with the supposed James also help show how John’s unconventional methods register with colleagues who knew the real detective.
Hoyle brings directness and alertness to the ensemble. The performance supports the procedural pace—information lands cleanly—while reactions and timing give Finch an identity beyond the delivery of clues. That economy is important in episodes balancing a guest cast, a murder puzzle and the Taylor mystery.
